As the summer progressed the silvers made there way to our estuaries in record numbers. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game opened up river fisheries (normally closed to protect spawners) early because of the large run. Estuary fly fishing was on fire during the last of August through mid September. The halibut bite was a good one as well. Mr. Halibut himself, Pinky Gray of Carson City, Nevada, pulled of a repeat of his old trick. In August of 2001, Craig Walkowski landed a fine 150# halibut. While we were celebrating Craig's catch, Pinky hooked up and landed the seasons biggest, 200#. Craig and Pinky were together again in September of this year. Craig hooked a great fish in shallow water. The fish ran for a kelp covered reef and it was all Craig could do to stop it. After a complete circumnavigation of the boat we finally landed Craig's 150# halibut. Moments later Pinky did it again! He hooked, a fish while we were taking pictures and shaking hands with Craig. Pinky fought his 200# Halibut to the boat for pictures and release. It was a good season for Halibut on the fly. We were able to score for all fly fishers who gave it a go. I, Dave Jones, landed my personal best. Fishing 50 feet of water, I used a Teeny 350 saltwater line, a 10wt Sage and my own Rabid Rabbit fly to boat and release a 50# Halibut. |
