AlpenView's 2004 Season Review

People, Places and Dates
The following is a who, when and where overview of the 2004 season. An asterisk (*) is placed after a persons name if they are a repeat visitor. The asterisk is red (*) if they are veterans of three or more trips with our organization. We are honored by the continued patronage of our guests and blessed with the continued help of our friends and staff.

Our king/sockeye season at the camp was a blur! The run produced a record 24,000+ kings and 250,000+ sockeye. We produced an amazing 15 kings per day per angler from June 5 to July 7.
6/8/04 114 king salmon to 6 rods in one day!
6/16/04 170 king salmon to 5 rods in one day!
6/21/04 216 king salmon to 6 rods in one day!
That's some good stuff.

At the lodge our salt and freshwater silver fishing was fantastic. Large schools of silvers were smacking bait off the east side of Kodiak Is. by mid July. Larry Treece, of Denver Colorado, was the lone angler on our boat July 16, 2004. We put Larry on a bite of halibut and silvers that he will not soon forget. Silvers, while feeding on bait fish in saltwater, are extremely aggressive! We suggest you don't fish with two flies unless your planing a double hookup by yourself.

As the summer progressed the silvers made there way to our estuaries in record numbers. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game opened up river fisheries (normally closed to protect spawners) early because of the large run. Estuary fly fishing was on fire during the last of August through mid September.
The halibut bite was a good one as well. Mr. Halibut himself, Pinky Gray of Carson City, Nevada, pulled of a repeat of his old trick. In August of 2001, Craig Walkowski landed a fine 150# halibut. While we were celebrating Craig's catch, Pinky hooked up and landed the seasons biggest, 200#. Craig and Pinky were together again in September of this year. Craig hooked a great fish in shallow water. The fish ran for a kelp covered reef and it was all Craig could do to stop it. After a complete circumnavigation of the boat we finally landed Craig's 150# halibut. Moments later Pinky did it again! He hooked, a fish while we were taking pictures and shaking hands with Craig. Pinky fought his 200# Halibut to the boat for pictures and release.
It was a good season for Halibut on the fly. We were able to score for all fly fishers who gave it a go. I, Dave Jones, landed my personal best. Fishing 50 feet of water, I used a Teeny 350 saltwater line, a 10wt Sage and my own Rabid Rabbit fly to boat and release a 50# Halibut.

We finished up back on the river for steelhead in October. Wild steelhead are a challenging and beautiful animal. We are always blessed with some but water and weather conditions can play a major factor in our level of success. Things came together in our final week this year. The river was falling and water clearing as the week progressed. We caught 109 steelhead with six rods during the last week. Over all the steelhead season produced a 2.8 steelhead per day per angler average. Not bad at all. In additions to the steelhead anglers landed several silvers and Dolly Varden each day.
